Finding the right Harvia sauna heater

Every sauna in our Fjord series can be fitted with a Harvia electric heater, and there are five models to choose from in the Harvia Cilindro range. All five share the same design and build quality; what sets them apart comes down to two things: heating power and whether they have Wi-Fi. The short guide below will help you match a heater to your sauna, the Irish climate and the electricity supply in your home.

How to choose the right heater

1. How big is your sauna, and how will you use it through the year?

A heater’s power (kW) sets how large a room it can heat and how quickly it gets there. Ireland’s mild, damp maritime climate means real cold snaps are rare, so for most homes a mid-range heater comfortably handles year-round use. If your sauna is on the larger side, sits in an exposed or coastal spot, or you simply like a fast, strong heat on a chilly winter’s evening, it’s worth stepping up the power. Each heater below lists its recommended room volume in cubic metres (m³).

2. What electrical supply do you have?

The PC90 and PC110 models need a three-phase (400V) supply. The PC70 models are more flexible: they run on either three-phase or a standard single-phase (230V) supply — though on single-phase the sauna takes a little longer to come up to temperature. Check what you have before ordering, and have the heater installed by a registered electrician (Safe Electric) — sauna heaters should always be wired by a qualified professional.

3. Would you like to switch the sauna on from your phone?

The “XW” models — the PC70XW and PC90XW — come with Wi-Fi. Using the free MyHarvia app (iOS and Android) you can turn the sauna on, set a timer and adjust the temperature from wherever you are, so it’s ready and warm when you get home. The “XE” models use the same Xenio control panel, just without Wi-Fi.

Tip: If you’re unsure, lean towards a bit more power. A heater with some headroom reaches temperature faster and runs more comfortably, particularly on damp, cooler evenings.

A closer look at each heater

Harvia PC70XE

The most adaptable option. At 6.8 kW, this heater is well suited to smaller saunas. It’s the only model that will run on an ordinary single-phase (230V) supply, so it works in homes without a three-phase connection. Operated with the Xenio control panel (no Wi-Fi).

Harvia PC70XW

The adaptable option, now with Wi-Fi. The same 6.8 kW heater as the PC70XE, with Wi-Fi added on. Switch on and schedule your sauna from the MyHarvia app, while keeping the flexibility of a single-phase connection. A great fit for smaller saunas where you’d like app control.

Harvia PC90XE

More power for medium and larger saunas. At 9 kW, a dependable choice for medium and larger cabins and for comfortable use right through the year. Needs a three-phase supply. Operated with the Xenio control panel (no Wi-Fi).

Harvia PC90XW

9 kW of power, plus app control. The 9 kW heater with Wi-Fi built in. Ideal for larger saunas and year-round use, with full control from the MyHarvia app. Needs a three-phase supply.

Harvia PC110XE

Our most powerful heater. At 10.8 kW, this is the heater for the largest Fjord saunas. It holds 120 kg of stones for plenty of soft, even steam and brings big cabins up to temperature quickly. Needs a three-phase supply. Operated with the Xenio control panel (no Wi-Fi).

What all five heaters have in common

All five are Harvia Cilindro pillar heaters. Their tall, cylindrical shape wraps the heating elements in a large bed of sauna stones — 90 kg, or 120 kg on the PC110. Air rises through the full column of hot stones, giving an even, soft and humid steam (löyly) from floor to ceiling. The slim stainless-steel body takes up little floor space and suits a modern sauna interior.

Every heater comes with a separate Xenio control panel that mounts on the wall, with a temperature range of 40–110°C. The two “XW” models add Wi-Fi and the MyHarvia app on top of that same panel.
