Wall thickness upgrade
Our cabin models are designed with strength and durability in mind and so are produced in the wood thickness that delivers these properties with lower costs. However, upgrading to thicker timbers will only add to the cabins strength and longevity as well as creating a more solid feeling building, with some improvement on thermal properties.
88mm Glue Laminated Timber (glulam)
Glulam is short for glued laminated timber, an engineered wood product composed of two layers of dimensioned lumber bonded together under pressure with durable, moisture-resistant adhesives. Here are some key benefits of glulam timber:
- Strength and Durability: Glulam is known for its high strength-to-weight ratio, making it stronger than steel pound-for-pound. That is why we have always produced our largest conference rooms and classroom cabins from 88mm glulam timbers.
- Better Insulation: Thanks to its high density glulam has excellent thermal insulation properties, keeping rooms cooler in the summer and warmer in winter.
- Higher Fire Resistance: The adhesive used in glulam resists charring improving the material’s ability to withstand fire.
- Reduced Shrinking and Warping: Glulam has a low moisture content and will not shrink, twist or warp significantly in time. This means permanent fixtures and final finishes can be added straight away.
- Aesthetics: Glulam offers a natural wood appearance and maintains the natural wood grains. It is not like a fibre board or orientated strand board that is made from wood chips or fibres with full resin glues.
- Sustainability: As a wood product, glulam is a renewable resource and is produced from sustainably managed forests. More of the tree is utilised in the manufacturing process, which means there’s less waste.
- Certification: Our Glulam products are certified to meet specific standards for quality and performance, such as those set by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN).
Maintenance
While glulam is durable, for external applications it should be protected from prolonged exposure to moisture and pests in the same way that our 44mm – 92mm timber logs should be. Application of a suitable wood preservative such as the Protek system we recommend will provide the necessary protection.
Glulam timbers offer a blend of traditional craftsmanship and modern engineering, making them a versatile, sustainable, and aesthetically pleasing choice for a wide range of construction projects. We have chosen 88mm glulam timbers for their consistency, quality, and strength.
